Introducing 802.11k/v/r: Improving Wireless Network Efficiency, Performance, and Roaming

 

As wireless networks become more prevalent and critical in our daily lives, it's essential to ensure their efficiency, performance, and roaming capabilities. To achieve these goals, several standards have been developed, including 802.11k, 802.11v, and 802.11r.

 

802.11k, also known as the Radio Resource Management (RRM) standard, is designed to optimize wireless network performance by providing neighboring Access Point (AP) information, channel state information, client status information, and wireless frame classification information. This standard is widely used in high-density, high-capacity wireless network environments, such as airports, conference centers, and stadiums.

 

802.11v, also known as the Wireless Network Management (WNM) standard, is designed to improve network efficiency by providing network management and control functions, such as AP discovery, AP selection, client association, and power management. This standard is particularly useful in large-scale wireless network deployments, such as enterprise networks and public hotspots.

 

802.11r, also known as the Fast BSS Transition (FT) standard, is designed to improve wireless network roaming by providing fast and seamless handoffs between APs. This standard is particularly useful in environments where mobility is critical, such as hospitals, warehouses, and transportation hubs.
